What functionalities does the packaging industry need?
Proofs & samples
Useful is also a total overview of the number of outstanding proofs across all customer orders. If you then zoom in on the order level, its details should become visible, as well as the date the proof was sent to the customer.
For each order, you want to be able to see the outstanding proofs and their current status. For example, an order must not be processed without the customer's permission. This prevents you from being stuck with stock that is customer-specific.
Options and variations
Packaging companies almost exclusively provide customized solutions.
So an ERP package for the packaging industry must be enormously flexible and be able to deal with a thousand-and-one options and variants.
It is important that your ERP package can link specific features to customer-specific (customized) packaging, such as various types of printing, closures, handles, etc.
Separately or as a group?
Sometimes companies supply both individual product packages and packages containing a group of individual products. These packages differ in shape but may share common characteristics, making it important to link them together.
In addition, larger packages are often supplied in units consisting of a specific number of smaller packages. Your ERP system must correctly interpret the relationship between these two types of products and take this into account in sales, transportation, and production.
Combining contracts
Another functionality, useful for the packaging industry is the option to combine sales contracts with purchase contracts.
In doing so, you have a choice: do you want to allow changes in the order? Are your customers allowed to order more or fewer copies, and if so, until what date can they submit changes?
Moreover, you can also enter what percentage of the original order may be changed with more or less deliveries.
Private label packaging
Some of your customers may have a private-label product: you manufacture this product, and it is sold under your customer’s name.
Your ERP system must assist your sales department with this: which products may not be sold or quoted to other customers?
If you produce white-label products, certain items cannot be sold to other customers. Your ERP system will prevent this for you.
Packaging
For the production of single-use packaging, it’s important that your ERP system contains all the necessary information about environmental requirements and the disposal (waste processing) of your product.
You also have to deal with deposits, returns, cleaning, and a certain percentage that you must write off annually for lost or damaged packaging.
Your ERP system must be able to handle all these variables and provide you with real-time insight into the current status and packaging balance at all times.
